Curiosity is Everything

The Ig Noble awards were celebrated on October 6th of this year. Awarded at a ceremony at Harvard, the Ig Nobles go to people who have "done something that first makes people LAUGH and then makes people THINK". These zany ideas often have useful consequences, but I often start off thinking "someone got a grant to do that!?? The award ceremonies are lots of fun, and real Nobel Laureates give the prizes to the recipients.

This year's awards were stellar as always. My favorite, thought, has to go to the winners of the Ig Nobel Prize in Literature:

LITERATURE: The Internet entrepreneurs of Nigeria, for creating and then using e-mail to distribute a bold series of short stories, thus introducing millions of readers to a cast of rich characters -- General Sani Abacha, Mrs. Mariam Sanni Abacha, Barrister Jon A Mbeki Esq., and others -- each of whom requires just a small amount of expense money so as to obtain access to the great wealth to which they are entitled and which they would like to share with the kind person who assists them.

Also of note (though they're all great) is this year's winner in Fluid Dynamics:
FLUID DYNAMICS: Victor Benno Meyer-Rochow of International University Bremen, Germany and the University of Oulu, Finland; and Jozsef Gal of Loránd Eötvös University, Hungary, for using basic principles of physics to calculate the pressure that builds up inside a penguin, as detailed in their report "Pressures Produced When Penguins Pooh -- Calculations on Avian Defaecation."PUBLISHED IN: Polar Biology, vol. 27, 2003, pp. 56-8.

Yay science! Curiousity is what brings about new discoveries.

Who wants to have fun with science more? Professors with small offices that have no windows want to have fun with science more.

Glory be to the gods of gasoline

So I just bought some gas for $1.99/gallon out here in Michigan, horray! Now I know we have it way cheaper than folks in Europe to begin with, but I'm still happy that my morning commute is under the 2 dollar mark.

who wants cheap gas more?
cheapskate students want cheap gas more
